Web CMS vendor Interwoven recently announced that 10,000 members have signed up for its Developer Network. That's an impressive number, though some recent expansion doubtless comes from licensees of the various products that Interwoven has acquired in its race to become an ECM vendor. Of course, TeamSite developers can use all the help they can get, when performing even simple administrative tasks in the CMS requires invoking obscure perl scripts from a command line. But a large, committed community can make the obscure more transparent. And Interwoven has built such a community -- even out of necessity. We laud them for it... More about Interwoven DevNet ..

Traditionally enterprise content management (ECM) systems help organize and maintain office information for large corporations. CMS Watch has assigned Stellent various monikers over the years, from "tool maker" to "intranet solution". To the list we now add "puzzler." Stellent recently won AIIM's "Best in Show" Award in the ECM Suite category for the second year in a row. But the company cannot seem to surpass in either sales volume nor market cap its nearest competitors, including those staring down some serious technology challenges (e.g., Interwoven, Vignette, and Hummingbird). Nevertheless, the company retains a generally likable corporate culture: Stellent staffers tend to share a kind of earnest and straightforward style. It is an unfortunate fact of the contemporary software industry, however, that nice guys rarely finish first. ..

After walking back from the financial brink, Day keeps advancing. As is the often the case, the most notable pieces of the latest release of its CMS, Communique 3.5, are a bit hidden. We think it's significant that the product is now architected to run in 3rd-party Appservers rather than a generic JVM (though you can still expect to see a lot of server-side ECMAScript under the covers). And WebDAV support makes it more contributor-friendly. Like FatWire, Day now ships its own IDE, too; just exactly why vendors do this remains something of a mystery to us... It's been a while since there was a big product announcement in the ECM world, but today's announcement by Adobe that they will be embedding Alfresco into their LiveCycle Enterprise Suite will doubtless garner a few headlines. Alfresco, the UK-based open source ECM company, has certainly done a great job of marketing themselves since their launch a couple of years back, stealing some limelight from more established and much bigger vendors such as Interwoven, Vignette, and Open Text. The question we have to ask is whether this announcement is another marketing triumph, or whether it suggests something more substantial. First off is the fact that it is a real OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) deal, and the technology will actually get embedded into the Adobe offering, so it is more than simply a paper partnership...

Government is the biggest IT market in the world and, arguably, the most stable. Over the past decade, ECM VARs won their share of business in this space as a result of the e-government initiatives many federal, state, and local government agencies put in place to make their content and services accessible via the Web. With the Internet now firmly entrenched as a communication medium, the time has come for VARs to examine how far along different levels of the government are with these initiatives and how lucrative the market for e-government solutions is today.
